Gandhi Jayanti – Part One
October 2ndmarks the birth anniversary of Indian born, universal icon
of peace and non-violent resistance, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. To honor
the life of the man we have come to know as the Mahatma which means “Great
Soul,” Angela will chronicle his life over the course of three weeks
by reading from the concise “Biography of Mohandas K. Gandhi”
written by historian Roberta Strauss Feuerlicht. Today, the first seven
parts of the biography recounts Gandhi’s childhood marriage to Kasturbai,
his education in England, his first journey to South Africa where he experienced
humiliating racism at the hands of the ruling white minority, the first
crusade he organized with South African Indians against the status quo,
his realization that service to mankind would be his religion and finally
the creation of the most potent weapon in his non-violence arsenal “Satyagraha”
which means “The Force of Truth.” Today’s reading will
be accompanied by musical selections from Sheila Chandra, Anoushka Shankar,
Bob Marley, Crash Test Dummies, Bruce Cockburn and Tracy Chapman.

Gandhi Jayanti – Part Three
In this final installment recounting the Mahatma Gandhi's life, Angela
reads parts thirteen through fifteen of the "Biography of Mohandas
K. Gandhi," written by historian Roberta Strauss Feuerlicht. Born
in New York City in 1931, Feuerlicht also wrote biographies of great leaders
like John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
With India on her way to self-rule, her greatest challenge to achieving
this goal came from within, in the person of fellow Indian National Congress
member Mohammed Ali Jinna. Manipulating Hindu-Moslem animosity, Jinna
threatened civil war if a separate nation named Pakistan was not established
for Moslems, when self-rule would come in 1947. Much to the chagrin of
Gandhi, Congress' anxious desire for peace and independence made them
bow to Jinna’s demands and the repercussions of this decision can
still be felt today through continued Indo-Pak disunity. After a failed
assassination attempt, Gandhi met his demise at an outdoor prayer meeting
when Hindu fanatic Nathuram Vinayak Godse fired the shot that temporarily
extinguished the light of living truth. That light blazed on however and
inspired 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner and American civil rights leader
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who in his book “Stride Toward Freedom”
discussed Gandhi's influence on him and analyzed the philosophy of Gandhian
non-violence. After today’s reading, listeners will hear excerpts
from a conversation Angela had with Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi,
along with music from Trinidadian Dub Poet ANTON, Pakistani-American Hip
Hop artist Caz One and the man who is arguably Pakistan’s most renowned
musician, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
