Willie O'Ree - The Jackie Robinson of Hockey

Today's
guest is a living legend. In 1958 Willie O'Ree became the first Black
person to play in the National Hockey League when he suited up as a Boston
Bruin. His career as a player spanned twenty one seasons but his work
with the NHL family continues on today. As the Director of Youth Development
for the NHL Diversity program and the NHL Diversity Ambassador, Willie
crosses the country non-stop to inspire young people of all races to use
the discipline of hockey as a way to achieve their literal and figurative
goals. 2008 marks Willie's fiftieth anniversary with the league and today
Angela catches up with him at NHL headquarters to chat about his latest
activities, to learn how he played his entire hockey career while being
visually impaired and to discuss how his commitment to the game paved
the way for today's Black NHL players such as Jerome Iginla and Nigel
Dawes.
