DECEMBER 2010 Everybody talks about jobs. Some even sing about 'em! On this edition of "RocknRoots," hosts Tom Boyd and the late Ann Sternberg present a bunch of great musical expressions of jobs and working. There's jobs music from James Cotton, Nina Simone, Lightnin' Hopkins, the Grateful Dead, Five Chinese Brothers and a lot more. This RnR show first aired in 1999, but the music and the focus on jobs are as fresh as today.
The Bowery Mission has been serving homeless and hungry New Yorkers since 1879 and in 1894 started the Kids With A Promise program to help at-risk youth escape the pitfalls that spending idle Summer days in the Lower Eastside Tenements created. On today's program, James Macklin, Director of Outreach, talks about the changing face of the homeless in New York City; about the programs currently available to help the needy regain dignity and get back on their feet and he shares his own inspiring story about how his dabblings in the world of illegal drugs decades ago, left him poverty stricken and with no place to turn except the Bowery Mission. In the second part of the program, James Winans, Director of Development speaks at length about the Kids With A Promise program and how it serves to give city children a chance to enjoy Summer camp and understand that they can aspire to have a better quality of life and education, in spite of growing up in poor circumstances.
JANE MROSKO, Program Manager of the Travelers Aid International initiative at JFK Airport, sits down with Angela McKenzie during this holiday season to share the details of this reputable but somewhat unknown organization, and to inform listeners of its' mission to help and support travelers so that they will experience safe and pleasant passage. Travelers Aid International can be found in transportation centers across the nation - the most common being airports, train stations and bus depots and is located in Terminal 4 at JFK. This century and a half old organization started out by helping people who were heading westward across the United States and has since evolved into an international network of devoted volunteers. Volunteers are posted in all of JFK's terminals and they are involved in activities that range from answering simple travel questions, to more complex tasks like assisting US Customs and Border Protection officers and providing emergency aid to the occasional stranded or homeless traveler.
